This month's Tool Page Question:
Q: I am aware that several kennels are experiencing outbreaks of parvo virus disease in their puppies even after vaccination. Is there a new strain of canine Parvo Virus spreading across the country?

Dr. Page: The results of all the studies that have been conducted recently have shown that there has not been any change in the Canine Parvo Virus since it mutated to the CPV2b strain in 1984. The outbreaks of parvo infection in vaccinated puppies in kennels are caused by inadequate vaccination. This is due to in effective vaccines being administered and/or an improper vaccination schedule being followed. Most vaccines only address ONE strain of the virus!

Naturally, I recommend the use of NEOPAR® brand of canine parvo vaccine. It is the most effective vaccine available. NEOPAR® protects your puppies against ALL known strains of the parvo virus. It has also proven to be the safest vaccine to be given at the earliest age.

The recommended vaccination schedule is to give two doses of NEOPAR®; one at five weeks (35 days) of age and another at seven weeks (49 days) of age. This will provide a high level of protection against infection when you sell your puppies.
